With an ambitious bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games now officially on the table, Qatar is setting its sights on a new milestone that would mark the first time the Games are held in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Fresh off the resounding success of the FIFA World Cup 2022, Qatar is promising more than just elite competition. The country is set to offer athletes, fans, and visitors a cultural and experiential journey like no other, where futuristic infrastructure meets centuries-old traditions, and cutting-edge technology plays an intrinsic role in the warmth of Arab hospitality.

With 95% of the necessary venues already built and a roadmap to full readiness, Qatar’s bid is just practical and primed. And according to Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, president of the Qatar Olympic Committee, the country’s path forward to 2036 is about leveraging past successes to fuel a new era of growth, one that prioritises inclusivity, sustainability, and global partnerships.

If selected, the Games would likely be held during the cooler winter months, as with the 2022 World Cup. For those heading to Doha, this means an opportunity to fully take in the country’s offerings, including world-class museums, desert safaris, pristine beaches, dazzling souqs, and more.

During the sporting event, visitors can expect immersive fan zones, family-friendly festivals, culinary experiences, and state-of-the-art transport connecting the entire city in mere minutes.

When it comes to economic impact, the bid responds directly to the nation’s long-term vision to empower youth, elevate local talent, and diversify the economy through tourism, innovation and sport. From inclusive accessibility to green building design, the Qatar promises an Olympics for the future.

While it faces stiff competition from other global hopefuls like India, Indonesia, Turkey, and Chile, Qatar’s pitch combines proven capability with bold promise. The stage is set. The world is watching. And Doha, once again, is ready to welcome it all.

For now, we look forward to Doha hosting the Asian Games in 2030, which follows Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the Asian Winter Games in Trojena a year earlier.
