In a move set to redefine global aviation, Emirate of Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum revealed on the 28 April 2024 that Al Maktoum International Airport, also known as Dubai World Central (DWC), will soon surpass its predecessor DXB as the primary air passenger hub as it enters into its second phase.
The new mega-airport promises to dwarf existing aviation hubs, marking it a pivotal moment in Dubai’s skyward trajectory. With passenger numbers soaring, DXB recently celebrated a remarkable 31.7% surge in traffic, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and underlining Dubai’s unwavering appeal as a global travel destination.
Embracing the ambitious expansion, airlines like Emirates and Fly Dubai eagerly anticipate the next phase of DWC. “A new place for us to call home!” exclaimed representatives, echoing the industry’s excitement for this monumental development.
With an eye to the future, the AED 128 billion investment underscores Dubai’s commitment to staying ahead in the aviation race. Envisioned to handle a staggering 260 million passengers annually, DWC will boast five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates, dwarfing its predecessor in scale and ambition.
As Dubai charts a course toward unparalleled heights, the unveiling of the world’s largest airport cements its status as a beacon of innovation and progress in the realm of air travel.
