Top 15 flying etiquette no-nos

Why is it that the second people board a flight, some passengers treat the plane like their own personal living room? To avoid becoming the next viral problem passenger, here are the flying etiquette no-nos that everyone needs to know.

1. Personal space violations

Personal space on a plane is precious. Keep your elbows tucked in, and avoid draping your hair or clothing over the back of the seat. Nobody wants a surprise guest star in their in-flight movie. The middle seat comes with one major perk: both armrests. If you’re sitting there, feel free to claim them. For everyone else, respect this unspoken rule and avoid turning the flight into an armrest war.

Are you struggling with space but don’t want to bother anyone else? Consider taking space-saving items like neck pillows that prevent you from slumping into other people’s areas and blow-up footrests that make you more comfortable. If this still isn’t enough, consider picking your seats wisely to get the most room (or upgrade!).

2. It’s a touch-screen not a poke-screen

It’s important to keep in mind that your inflight TV screen is a touch screen and comes with a remote control. Refrain from aggressively poking on the screen when browsing or selecting your options because, surprise, surprise, the screen is attached to a seat with another passenger on it, and chances are they can feel every poke.

3. Bag placement shenanigans

Always place your carry-on directly above your seat. Using a different cabin might mean someone else not being able to store theirs above their own seat; and you might even be the last person standing at the end of the flight, waiting for a chance to retrieve your bag while others disembark.

For those with upgrades and multiple carry-ons, make sure one of them is stored under the seat in front of you and does not take up two spaces in the overhead lockers.

4. Bringing pungent foods

Nothing clears a plane faster than a smelly snack. Leave the tuna sandwich and garlic-laden dishes at home. Stick to less intrusive options like pretzels or nuts to avoid the collective stink eye from your fellow passengers.

5. Forgetting your headphones

Playing your music or watching a movie without headphones is a surefire way to annoy those around you. Always pack your headphones and use them to keep the peace. This extends to having the volume in your headphones in broadcast mode! While headphones will allow you to turn them up so high it feels like you’re at a concert, be aware that the people around you can hear this. So, leave the thumping base for when you reach your destination.

6. Reclining recklessly

Reclining your seat can lead to a chain reaction of discomfort. Keep your seat upright as much as possible to avoid triggering a wave of irritation throughout the cabin. If you really need to recline or change seat position for any reason, politely check with the person behind you and give them notice so you’re not suddenly in their lap!

7. Blocking the aisle

When boarding, store your carry-on quickly and take your seat. Lingering in the aisle to organise your belongings or stand and chat creates a bottleneck that frustrates everyone behind you. The same goes for during your flight. Avoid using the aisle as your own personal storage area because the walkway needs to remain clear for cabin crew and the rest of the passengers.

8. Cosying up to strangers

Sleeping on a flight is fine, but be mindful of those around you, and try not to use other people as a pillow! A neck pillow can help keep your head and snores in check so you don’t end up on someone’s social media feed for all the wrong reasons.

9. Arguing with crew

Flight attendants are there for your safety, not just to serve snacks. Respect their instructions and avoid arguments. It’s like arguing with a refereeβ€”you’ll never win, and they have the power to remove you before take-off.

10. Racing to disembark

When the plane lands, you’re not going anywhere until the crew finish their checks and open the doors, so you don’t need to be in the aisle blocking everyone else ahead of you. The plane isn’t a race track. Stay calm and courteous when retrieving your belongings from the overhead compartment and disembarking. A little patience goes a long way in keeping everyone happy.

Some people see flights as an opportunity to relax, read, or even nap. Forcing a conversation with an unwilling neighbour can be intrusive. Gauge their interest before engaging in lengthy chats, and respect their desire for quiet time. You’ll know fairly early on if you have someone who wants to chat or not. And if you’re a nervouse flyer, let the air crew know and they will be more than happy to help calm your nerves.

12. Skipping the shower

Flights involve close quarters, and neglecting personal hygiene is a surefire way to alienate fellow passengers. Be mindful of your body odour, smelly feet, stinky breath, and even overpowering scents or perfume. If you’ve had a long and active day, taking a shower at the airport prior to flying will not only save you from angry looks, but it will keep your fellow neighbours from possibly gagging. Not to mention, you’d feel refreshed and comfortable as well.

13. Talking loudly

Sharing a flight with companions can be fun, but overly loud conversations will disrupt others’ peace, especially on long-haul flights. Nobody enjoys flights with screaming kids. Similarly, nobody enjoys listening to loud rambuctions passengers. Keep your volume down to a calm tone and maintain a happy cabin environment with those around you.

14. Packing on the PDA

Ever sat next to newlyweds? It can certainly be awkward for everyone who isn’t the happy couple. A quick cuddle or hand-holding is fine, but anything beyond that can make those around you uncomfortable, especially if children are on board. Save the lovey-dovey intimate displays of affection for when you’re in private.

15. Letting the “wiggly toes” fly

Taking off your shoes during a flight can be a big problem in the confined space of the cabin. Bare or socked feet can make others uncomfortable, particularly if an odour or dirt is involved.

It’s also unhygienic to place bare feet on the floor, seats, or walls, where others may come into contact. If your shoes are tight or uncomfortable, loosen them slightly, instead of removing them completely. Remember, the close quarters of a flight require everyone to be considerate of shared spaces, so keep the wiggly digits in the shoes until you get to your destination.
