Travellers flying out to Beirut, Lebanon are being advised to leave any personal pagers and two-way radios behind.

As an act of caution, Lebanon’s National News Agency, the Civil Aviation Directorate have banned the two communication devices from flights in and out of the country. The decision was made after thousands of pagers and walkie talkies were detonated in a deadly attack across the country earlier this week. At least 37 people were killed, including two children under 11 years old, and thousands more have sustained various levels of injuries.

Airlines operating in and out of Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport (BEY) have been informed of the new restriction which applies to both carry-on and checked luggage, as well as cargo shipments. The Directorate didn’t offer an end date for the ban, saying it is in place indefinitely.

Qatar Airways was the first carrier to acknowledge the ban on the communication devices, saying “all passengers flying from Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport are prohibited from carrying pagers and walkie-talkies on board flights”.
