Petra City has joined the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), demonstrating its commitment to responsible tourism practices and its alignment with global shifts in tourism trends.

As travelers increasingly seek destinations that prioritize sustainability and adhere to international standards, Petra’s inclusion in the GSTC highlights its dedication to preserving its rich cultural heritage while catering to the growing demand for eco-conscious tourism.

The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) has embarked on an ambitious project to implement GSTC-approved sustainable tourism standards, with the goal of positioning Petra as a model for sustainable tourism. This initiative is part of the PDTRA’s broader tourism plan for 2021-2025, which aims to enhance Petra’s appeal to environmentally conscious travelers while maintaining its status as a world-renowned destination.

The implementation of sustainable tourism standards will be carried out in multiple phases, with a focus on training and qualification programs, awareness campaigns, and international cooperation. The PDTRA has secured funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to support this initiative, which will be used to educate and guide stakeholders across Petra’s tourism sectors.

By adopting GSTC-approved standards, Petra aims to create a unified and cohesive approach to sustainable tourism, involving both public and private entities. This holistic strategy is expected to enhance the overall quality and sustainability of tourism in Petra, ensuring long-term benefits for both the environment and the economy.
