Tourists travelling through parts of Türkiye should remain cautious as the country slowly gains control over raging wildfires.
Around 130 fires blazed across several regions in western Türkiye last week, including the tourist-friendly provinces of Izmir, Aydin, Manisa, Karabuk and Bolu. Nearly 4,000 people, mostly residents, were evacuated over the weekend, including all non-essential people in the resort city of Izmir along the Aegean coast.
Thousands of firefighters were brought in to help tackle the fires through a range of air and land activities including helicopters. According to a statement by Türkiye’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumakli, progress is being made in controlling the fires. Burns in Manisa and Usak Esme have been tamed while conditions in Aydin are becoming more stable.
With regards to traveller-friendly Izmir, Menderes, Mulga Ula and Yatagan, Mr Yumakli said the fires were partially under control as of Monday.
Mr Yumakli acknowledged the team’s response, saying the fires were being tamed by their interventions. “Cooling efforts continue,” he added.
Despite gaining control of the fires, Turkish authorities have issued travel warnings of further wildfires as a result of high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds, The Mirror reported. Locals have also been advised to avoid lighting fires over the coming days.
