From record-breaking visitor numbers, new hospitality investments in Diriyah, an Abu Dhabi takeover in NYC, and an old landmark becoming a new attraction in Doha, itβs getting exciting in key destinations in the Middle East this week. Plus, Jeddah is preparing for summer like never before. Here are the headlines:
Dubai breaks visitor records during first half of 2024
In the first half of 2024, Dubai welcomed a record 9.31 million international overnight visitors, up 9% compared to last year. The total for 2023 was 17.15 million, so continuing on this momentum, Dubai looks to break this record by the end of 2024.
Building on last yearβs tourism, strategies driven by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourismβs (DET) include highlighting the cityβs appeal and improving the city’s transportation network to exploring emerging markets, increasing its hospitality and culinary offerings, working on new international partnerships, and hosting more international events.
Diriyahβs $2.13 billion luxury hotel deal
As part of its Wadi Safar area, Diriyah company is set to welcome four luxury hotels and establish an equestrian club with the Royal Diriyah Equestrian & Polo Club. This $2.13 billion project is the largest individual contract so far, surpassing Julyβs $2.07 billion Northern District contract.
The four luxury hotels: Aman, Faena, The Chedi, and Six Senses, have been awarded to two of Saudi Arabiaβs leading construction firms, Al Bawani and Urbacon Saudi. These are part of more than 40 luxury hotels planned for Diriyah and Wadi Safar which are being positioned as a centre of luxury in the region. βThe Polo Club will create a true centre of regional excellence and build on the proud history and heritage of the Arabian horse and Saudiβs equine traditions,” said Group CEO of Diriyah Company, Jerry Inzerillo.
Abu Dhabi takes Man City to the Big Apple
Manchester Cityβs summer tour has taken them to 49th Street in New York City to promote Abu Dhabi as an exciting travel destination. Experience Abu Dhabi is working alongside Man City partners Etihad Airways and PUMA to put on an immersive βPenalty Itineraryβ. The goal? (pun intended) for fans to win a trip to Abu Dhabi, including activities, attractions and experiences.
During the activation, fans will take penalties, with every successful goal unlocking a new attraction or activity during the trip. Ferrari World Yas Island and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque are included in the βline-upβ. Participants are then entered into the draw to win the trip. Whether or not they win the grand prize, several other exclusive prizes are up for grabs, including Etihad Guest Miles, limited-edition kit, signed merchandise, and gift cards.
Old Doha Port becomes a new attraction
The Old Doha Port is being recognised for more than the 81 cruise ships it has served this year. It has now become a tourist destination in its own right. Bringing together sustainability and innovation with history and local character, it served 350,000 passengers in 2024.
This growth represents the largest cruise season it has ever seen. Tourists are visiting for more than just cruising, with features that include over 50 dining options, culturally significant architecture and vibrant buildings. Located in the centre of Doha, near landmarks like the Museum of Islamic Art, the Doha Corniche, and Souq Waqif, itβs an excellent place to stop off while youβre visiting the city.
Jeddah brings 442 parks and five waterfronts for summer
Jeddahβs waterfronts and parks have been upgraded to enhance the summer experience for visitors. An increase in local and international visitors to Jeddah has seen the Jeddah Municipality invest in five waterfronts and 442 parks, offering a variety of recreational activities and attractions.
These areas feature fountains, artistic sculptures, playgrounds, beaches, and dining options alongside a range of entertainment for individuals and families throughout the season. In line with increasing sports and adventure tourism in the Middle East, the areas will feature bike paths, pedestrian walkways, and sports facilities to cater to all types of travellers.
