UAE, Saudi and Turkey rising the ranks and breaking records
According to the UN World Tourism Barometer (UNWTO), the UAE is currently the sixth highest earner from international tourism. Having risen from its previous 13th place, the UAE logged $51.9 billion in international tourism receipts in 2023. Leading the ranks were the United States, earning $176 billion in 2023, followed by Spain at $92 billion, the United Kingdom at $74 billion, France at $69 billion, and Italy at $56 billion.
The 2024 Economic Impact Research (EIR) from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has revealed that Saudi Arabia and Turkeyβs tourism sectors are breaking records and achieving remarkable growth. Saudi Arabiaβs GDP contribution rose to SAR 444.3 billion, representing 11.5% of the nation’s economy. Jobs in the sector grew by 436,000, reaching over 2.5 million. International visitor spending also increased by 57% to SAR 227.4 billion. The kingdom has also welcomed 100 million tourists, setting a new target of 150 million by 2030
Turkeyβs tourism sector contributed TRY 3.11 trillion to the economy, which is 12% of the total GDP. The number of jobs supported by tourism rose significantly to 3.2 million, and international visitor spending increased by 36%, surpassing the 2019 record.
The spotlight is on Sharjahβs new landmark
A futuristic moon-shaped project is set to rise in Sharjah’s mountains, with the aim of attracting global tourists. At 850m above sea level, the Ghamam (meaning βabove the cloudsβ) will feature restaurants, prayer rooms, scenic views, an open theatre, childrenβs play areas, and luxury accommodations. Meanwhile, the Ruler of Sharjah, Dr. Sheikh Sultan, has recently announced plans to build mountain-top stadiums for the Kalba Club and Khorfakkan Club in the UAE situated at 850ft and 900ft above sea level, respectively.
