NEOM has made a groundbreaking move by procuring eight Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil ships for its planned water transport network. This record-breaking order marks a significant milestone in creating an eco-friendly and efficient water transport system in the region.
The Candela P-12, the world’s first electric hydrofoil ship, is set to transform water commuting by offering a zero-emission alternative to traditional ferry services. With its cutting-edge technology, the P-12 boasts 80% less energy consumption than conventional ships, and reduce emissions by 97.5% compared to conventional diesel-powered vessels.
The Candela C-POD electric motors nestled in underwater pods run with extraordinary quietness and minimal disruption to marine ecosystems. Additionally, the P-12’s hydrofoil design produces a negligible wake, allowing for expedited journeys in areas where conventional ships are restricted due to their substantial and environmentally damaging wakes.
In terms of comfort, the P-12’s digital flight control system ensures a smooth and stable ride, making commuting across the Red Sea a seamless experience for passengers; and with a speed of 25 knots and more than 2 hours of endurance, the vessel holds is currently the fastest and longest-range electric passenger ship.
Launched last year, the Candela P-12 seats between 20 and 30 people depending on configuration; and is set to debut in Stockholmβs public transport during fall this year.
“Weβre extremely proud to provide a vessel system designed with both passengers and the environment in mind. Short waiting times, quick connections, and a very enjoyable experience without taxing the environment with wakes, emissions, and noise will revolutionize how we travel on water,” said Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and Founder of Candela.
The first batch of eight Candela P-12 vessels is scheduled for delivery to NEOM in 2025 and early 2026.
