Family fun in Sharjah

Sharjah offers a wide range of affordable, family-friendly activities that are entertaining and educational. Whether you’re looking for indoor activities, hands-on learning, cultural experiences or a little bit of nature, Sharjah has something for everyone to enjoy. Here are six activities to try.Β 

1. Sharjah Science Museum

For curious minds and hands-on fun, the Sharjah Science Museum is a family must-visit. The museum features interactive exhibits that make learning a joy, especially for kids. From discovering the wonders of space to experimenting with electricity and mechanics, there’s something to engage everyone.

You can even explore anatomy through life-sized models or try out optical illusions! There are also workshops for ages 6 – 12 and live demonstrations that keep things exciting. The science museum is free for under 2s, seniors (60+) and their companions, and costs AED5 for children under 12 with adults paying AED10. It’s wheelchair accessible and open from 8am – 8pm Saturday to Thursday, and 4pm – 8pm on Fridays. 

2. Prison Island

For a bit of adventure and problem-solving, take the family to Prison Island! This escape-room-style attraction is filled with challenging puzzles and team-based tasks that are perfect for bonding. Families must work together to solve clues and complete physical challenges in a race against time.

It’s great fun for those who love adventure and a mental work. Young adults and adults alike will enjoy the thrill of cracking codes, escaping from β€œprison cells,” and testing their teamwork and interactive communication skills. WHat a great way to bond! Each team can comprise of two to six players and pricing is done on packages per team. As an example, a one-hour prison game starts at AED 99 (aroun d US$27). 

3. Sharjah Planetarium

Open Monday to Thursdays 9am – 3pm, take your family on a cosmic adventure at the Sharjah Planetarium and Space Exhibition. With stunning shows in the 18m dome about the wonders of the universe, you and your kids can explore distant planets, stars, and galaxies from the comfort of your seat.

The planetarium’s immersive visuals and informative narrations make learning about space an exciting journey for all ages. Kids will especially love the meteorite exhibits, while parents can enjoy the fascinating deep-space imagery. The Plentarium is ppen Monday to Thursday 9am – 3pm, with extended hours on Thursday 4pm – 8pm and tickets cost AED25 per child, and AED50 per adult.  

4. Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre

For a more community and nature-oriented family outing, the Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre offers a peaceful retreat into Sharjah’s coastal ecosystems. This calm environment is perfect for nature walks and bird-watching, allowing families to explore mangroves up to 8m tall, spot rare birds like the Arabian Collared Kingfisher, and learn about marine life.

The well-maintained trails make it easy for all ages to enjoy. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of sea turtles or other wildlife. The educational aspect of the centre makes it both fun and informative, giving kids a chance to connect with nature in a hands-on way. It’s open every day except Mondays. 

5. Adventureland

Adventureland in Sharjah is an indoor entertainment centre with more than 40 rides and 170 games across 90,000sq ft of floor space. Enjoy activities from roller coasters to bumper cars, plus a range of arcade games for some friendly competition. There’s also bowling, a climbing wall, an indoor skating rink, soft play, a trampoline park and virtual reality (VR) attractions to keep everyone engaged.

Entry is free, but rides and activities operate on a pay-per-use basis. Rechargeable cards allow you to load credits, and ride prices range from AED10-25. It is open daily, with extended hours on weekends. 

6. Al Noor Island

Al Noor Island opened in 2015 and offers families a tranquil escape into nature, with lush gardens, art installations, and the stunning Butterfly House which is open 9 am – 6 pm. The island is a haven for those who want a mix of relaxation and exploration. Landscape paths connect whimsical art pieces, as well as The Literature Pavilion, Kids Playground and Bay area. β€˜By the Bay’ is open 9 am – 10:30 pm allowing you to dine by the Island’s waters with a city view, with sky watch and night astronomy sessions available throughout the day. A standard pass for Al Noor Island which includes a self-guided tour of the Butterfly House with an educator is AED 30 for children and AED 50 for adults for the hour.

Whether you’re into thrilling adventures, peaceful nature, or interactive learning, there’s something in Sharjah for everyone to enjoy and create lasting memories. Meanwhile, art enthusiasts can delight in the city’s rich artistic heritage by visiting these five venues.
