Marking a milestone in marine conservation and sustainable development in Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed inaugurated the groundbreaking Dubai Reef project with the launch of the initial reef modules.
The ambitious initiative, spearheaded by Dubai Can represents a significant stride towards ecological preservation and underscores Dubai’s commitment to environmental stewardship with the creation of this largest marine reef development in the world. Dubai Reef is set to span an impressive 600 square kilometers of Dubai’s waters, with 20,000 purpose-built reef modules to be deployed over a four-year period and involves a number of strategic partners including:
- DP World
- The Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority
- Nakheel
- Dubai Chambers
- Ports, Customs & Free Zone Corporation, and Emirates.
Central to the Dubai Reef initiative is the establishment of a marine institute dedicated to advancing marine science and conservation in Dubai. The institute will focus on efforts to protect and preserve the marine and coastal environment, working towards the ambitious goal of creating the most diverse artificial reef, teeming with over 1 billion corals and 100 million mangrove trees.
In addition to its research and conservation facilities, Dubai Reef will feature a range of eco-friendly amenities, including floating eco lodges powered by 100% renewable energy. Innovative technologies such as solar and hydropower, as well as ocean regenerative farming methods will ensure that the project operates in harmony with its natural surroundings. The project also aims to generate more than 30,000 jobs in a green economy fostering economic growth and increased tourism in the region.
The project represents a bold step towards safeguarding marine ecosystems and promoting responsible tourism practices.
