As Saudi continues to evolve in its tourism offering with sports, luxury and rich cultural experiences leading the way, the Red Sea is now taking adventure tourism a step further to improve its appeal as a premier luxury destination.

Spearheaded by Red Sea Global (RSG), the Red Sea region has been undergoing a significant transformation. Now, its latest partnership with the Saudi Climbing and Hiking Federation to develop hiking experiences in the Red Sea’s naturally rugged landscape is set to draw in even more adventure enthusiasts and luxury seekers desiring extraordinary outdoor experiences and activities.

Through its adventure sports brand, Akun, RSG will be expanding on the current experiences on offer including gravel, mountain, fat-tyre, electric biking, and trail running. This is complemented by the Bear Grylls Survival Academy introduced in 2023, which provides survival training and outdoor adventure experiences in the area.

The adventure element no doubt complements the luxury offerings of high-end experiences being developed in the region, such as collaboration between Neom and Marriott International to bring the Ritz-Carlton Reserve to the Trojena Mountains. This ultra-luxury resort is designed to offer an exclusive and immersive experience, nestled in the dramatic mountain landscape. Additionally, Thuwal Private Retreat and AMAALA are set to provide bespoke luxury and wellness journeys, contributing to RSG’s portfolio of 50 resorts expected to be operational by 2030.

Further, the introduction of Saudi Arabia’s first-ever cruise line, AROYA, is also set to enhance the Red Sea’s appeal in the softer adventure niche. Launching in December 2024, AROYA promises to offer spectacular marine experiences designed to encourage cruise-goers to explore the pristine waters of the Red Sea.

The Saudi Central Bank recorded a significant boost in Saudi’s tourism sector in 2024, with tourist spending up by 23%  in Q1. The Kingdom also welcomed 60 million tourists in the same quarter. This is attributed to the strategic investments and development of new attractions, experiences and facilities like the Red Sea Region.
