Abu Dhabi’s record-breaking year of tourism

Abu Dhabi

Travellers can’t get enough of the Emirates’ capital, whether it’s for a business tripromantic getaway, or a quick stopover.

Last year, Abu Dhabi’s five commercial airports welcomed more travellers than ever before with 29.4 million people passing through their gates. This was a huge 28.1% increase on the 22.9 million people in 2023.

Zayed International Airport, the city’s international gateway, handled most of the passenger traffic as well as the majority of the 21% increase in cargo. The growth was attributed to the addition of 29 new routes and the arrival of eight new airlines which led to a 10% increase in aircraft movements from 226,362 in 2023 to 249,747 in 2024.

Travellers flew in from all around the world, but the majority came from Abu Dhabi’s key markets of the UK, India, Qatar and Egypt.

Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports said the record-breaking year reinforced the city’s position as a global destination.

“These achievements highlight our commitment to delivering a world-class travel experience and strengthening Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading global aviation hub,” she said. “We are deeply grateful for the support of our stakeholders and airline partners, this strong performance positions us for continued progress and reinforces our contribution to Abu Dhabi’s economic diversification”.

To keep up with ever-growing visitor numbers, Abi Dhabi Airports invested in infrastructure updates and underwent significant expansion in 2024. This included the completion of the Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project at Zayed International Airport as well as the inauguration of the new US Customs and Border Protection facility to enhance convenience for US passport holders.

Zayed International Airport also introduced biometric touchpoints last year, to streamline the passenger journey from check-in desks to self-service baggage drop and e-gates. The airport also received the new ACI Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation for opening a new Sensory Space, launching the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Programme and introducing a dedicated Pet Relief Area.

While 2024 may have been a big year for the city, 2025 is expected to be bigger thanks to major events taking place including the Coldplay performance in Zayed Sports City last month, and the upcoming Christina Aguilera performance on Saadiyat Island.
