Middle East Airlines adjusts flight schedules for 23 Feb

Middle East Airlines (MEA) has announced changes to its flight schedules for 23 February 2025, due to a temporary suspension of air traffic at Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport between 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm. While all flights will operate, some departure and arrival times have been adjusted. MEA advises passengers to check updated schedules, arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure, and follow guidance from the Internal Security Forces on road conditions leading to the airport.

IATA opens nominations for Diversity and Inclusion Awards

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched nominations for its 6th annual Diversity and Inclusion Awards, recognising individuals and organisations advancing diversity and inclusion in aviation. The awards comprise three categories: Inspirational Role Model, High Flyer, and Diversity & Inclusion Team. Winners will receive $25,000, sponsored by Qatar Airways. An independent judging panel will select the winners, who will be announced at IATA’s 81st Annual General Meeting in Delhi, India on 2 June.

Saudi’s air tranport sees unprecedented growth in 2024

Saudi Arabia’s air transport sector achieved remarkable growth in 2024, with a record 128 million passengers passing through its airports, a 15% increase from the previous year and 25% rise from pre-pandemic levels. The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) reported that domestic flights carried 59 million passengers, while international routes handled 69 million. The sector also saw an 11% increase in flights, a 16% rise in air connectivity, and a 34% growth in air cargo, exceeding 1.2 million tonnes.

DXB prepares for peak travel period

Dubai International (DXB) is expecting to welcome more than 2.5 million travellers between 20-28 February, averaging 280,000 daily. To manage the influx, authorities are encouraging travellers to use the Dubai Metro and advising of alternative transport options due to the temporary closure of the Arrivals bus stop at Terminal 1 from 21 February. The airport’s oneDXB community is working together to ensure smooth operations and seamless journeys through the world’s busiest international hub.

Qatar Airways launches UEFA Champions League Final travel packages

Qatar Aviation Services trials autonomous transportation at DOH

Qatar Aviation Services (QAS) has launched a trial of autonomous transportation solutions at Hamad International Airport, in collaboration with Matar and Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP). The proof-of-concept trials, which began on 16 February, feature autonomous vehicles, including a bus and baggage tractor, equipped with advanced technologies such as GPS, AI, and sensors. The initiative aims to enhance operational safety, efficiency, and sustainability, with plans to expand the autonomous fleet and contribute to Qatar’s broader autonomous transportation framework.

SalamAir to expand fleet

SalamAir plans to add 10 Airbus A320 aircraft to its fleet over the next three years to meet growing passenger demand. The airline has seen a 20% increase in passenger volume in 2024, carrying over 3.2 million passengers, and aims to expand its domestic and regional flights, and introduce new destinations. The fleet expansion will take SalamAir’s total aircraft to 25 by 2028, with two new A321 aircraft set to join the fleet in 2025.

Jazeera Airways introduces customisable travel packages

Jazeera Airways, Kuwait’s leading low-cost airline, has launched “Package Your Way”, an innovative travel offering enabling passengers to tailor their journey with bespoke options. This pioneering approach allows travellers to pay only for desired benefits, enhancing their experience without breaking the bank. Three introductory packages are available and prices start from: Essential (US$ 16), Flexi (US$ 32), and Flexi Plus (US$ 48), each offering varying perks such as priority service, meal combos, and additional baggage allowances. Oman Air achieves record-breaking seat occupancy

Oman Air has recorded its highest ever seat occupancy, achieving a record 88% total load factor in January 2025, surpassing the global average of 83.5%. Several destinations reached load factors of up to 95%, with Business Class seats achieving 77% occupancy. The airline’s CEO, Con Korfiatis, attributed the success to the airline’s network strength and transformation efforts, with a focus on delivering exceptional service and providing more travel options.

Gulf Air Group sees significant growth in 2024

Gulf Air Group (GFG) has reported a strong performance in 2024, with significant growth in passenger traffic, network expansion, and strategic initiatives. The group’s national carrier, Gulf Air, added six new destinations and resumed services to Iraq, resulting in a 5.4% increase in passenger numbers to 6.2 million. Bahrain International Airport welcomed 9.4 million passengers, a 7.3% increase, and handled over 390,000 tonnes of cargo, an 11.2% rise. Gulf Aviation Academy also achieved notable milestones, including new partnerships and certifications. Overall, the group’s performance underscores its commitment to strengthening Bahrain’s aviation sector and contributing to the kingdom’s economic growth.

Etihad Airways unveils revamped digital experience

Etihad Airways has launched a new and improved digital experience across its website and mobile app, offering a modern and user-friendly platform for booking travel and gaining inspiration. The revamped digital experience features a re-engineered website navigation, bold new colours and enhanced digital self-service options, making it easier and more personalised for users. The mobile app now serves as a digital travel assistant, providing quick access to important travel information and tools. Etihad Guest members can also enjoy a more personalised experience, with easy access to loyalty programme management and benefits.

flydubai eyes Indian market with potential partnership with Busy Bee

Dubai-based low-cost carrier flydubai is reportedly exploring a partnership with Busy Bee to acquire India’s Go First Airways. The move would enable flydubai to establish a foothold in India’s rapidly growing domestic aviation market. Busy Bee, founded by Pran Sathiadasan, who serves as flydubai’s director of commercial operations for Southeast Asia, has made an offer of approximately Rs 1,000 crore for Go First’s trademarks and licenses. The partnership, subject to regulatory approval, could introduce more competition and improve connectivity within India, bringing more affordable travel options to passengers and strengthening flydubai’s presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.

QAIA Sees 12.9% Surge in Passenger Traffic in January 2025

Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) welcomed 784,992 passengers in January 2025, a 12.9% increase compared to the same month last year. Aircraft movements also rose by 5.1% to 6,061, while cargo handling declined by 22.9% to 4,940 tons. According to Airport International Group CEO Nicolas Deviller, the growth in passenger traffic reflects the airport’s enhanced connectivity and business opportunities.
