Saudi Arabia issues guidelines for prescription drugs

Saudi Arabia has introduced a new digital permit system for travellers carrying prescription and controlled medications.

For years, international visitors to Saudi Arabia have faced uncertainty over travelling with prescription drugs. Questions around what medicines were permitted, which documents were required, and how to declare them at the border often left travellers anxious.

Now, with the launch of the Saudi Food and Drug Authority’s Controlled Drugs System (CDS), the process is clear, digital, and easily accessible.

Through the online platform, travellers simply:

  • Create an account on the CDS portal
  • Upload a valid prescription and supporting medical report
  • Provide identification and trip details, including the medicine name, active ingredients, dosage, and pack size
  • Track their application status (submitted, completed, rejected, or incomplete)
  • Print the official permit for smooth clearance upon arrival

This digital-first system ensures that travellers can bring necessary medication without disruption, while Saudi authorities maintain robust monitoring of controlled substances.

Why did Saudi Arabia introduce this system?

This system serves two priorities, and they are to ensure travel is more welcoming and efficient, while protecting the local communities from the misuse of sensitive medicines. Simply put:

  • Protecting public health: By tightening controls on the import of narcotics and psychotropics, the SFDA helps to prevent drug abuse and illegal trafficking.
  • Supporting tourism growth: With record visitor numbers and a surge in international arrivals for Umrah and Hajj, Saudi Arabia is working to remove barriers that once complicated entry.
  • Building confidence: Clear rules and transparent systems build trust, particularly for travellers managing chronic conditions who may rely on life-saving medications.

Who benefits?

International travellers, especially those with long-term or complex conditions, will gain peace of mind knowing they can travel with vital medication legally and securely, without fear of last-minute confiscations or penalties.

A the same time, Saudi authorities and communities will also gain a stronger defence against the misuse of drugs, and ensure genuine medical needs are respected.
