The successful inaugural passenger-carrying drone trials hosted by Abu Dhabi Mobility and Multi Level Group (MLG) during Abu Dhabi Mobility Week is poised to reshape the transportation scene in the Middle East.

Held from the 24 April – 1 May 2024, two test flights were carried out. The first featured a five-seater drone, capable of covering over 25km with a payload of up to 350kg. The second showcased a smaller drone designed to carry two passengers for distances of up to 35km in approximately 20 minutes.

At the heart of the event was MLG’s Advanced Mobility Hub, where attendees witnessed an array of Autonomous Aerial Vehicles (AAVs) in action. Undoubtedly, the maiden flight of the passenger-carrying drone was star of the show, when it covered 123km in 40 minutes, a record-setting distance.

This groundbreaking demonstration represented the potential this technology could unlock for logistics as well as travel and tourism in the Middle East. Dignitaries, government officials, and industry leaders gathered to witness history, with Mohamed Hamad Al Dhaheri, a Board Member of MLG, making history himself by boarding the first fully autonomous intra-city eVTOL flight in the Middle East.

“Being part of this historic moment is truly exhilarating. The seamless integration of technology and aviation represents a significant leap forward for our nation, and as an Emirati I am proud to be a part of it,” said Al Dhaheri.
