It’s lights out and away they go! The sports industry in the Middle East is expected to grow by 8.7% by 2026. Sports tourism represents more than a $600 billion dollar industry in the region as a result of hosting major events like the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the famous Dakar Rally and the presence of four Formula 1 racing circuits; Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, and Qatar.

Football continues to be immensely popular, further amplified by high-profile signings like Cristiano Ronaldo to Al-Nassr FC. Saudi Arabia’s investment in football is substantial, with the Public Investment Fund committing $2.3 billion to the sport in 2022. Additionally, Saudi Arabia will host the FIFA World Cup in 2034, further cementing the Middle East’s role in global football.

Formula 1 remains a key attraction, with upcoming races in Qatar (November 29 to December 1, 2024) and Abu Dhabi (December 6 to 8, 2024). The sport has not only brought significant tourism but also led to investments in related industries, such as Bell Racing Helmets’ production facility in Bahrain.

Women’s sports are also gaining ground, with Saudi Arabia set to host the Women’s Tennis Association finals for the next three years. This move marks a significant step in promoting gender equality in sports in the region.

Golf is another area of growth, with the DP World Tour Championship scheduled in November, showcasing the region’s increasing appeal in other sports.
