Expedia has released its UAE Summer Travel Outlook, and there’s no summertime sadness from the region to be found.

In fact, it’s been revealed that UAE residents are exploring more destinations at home and abroad than ever before.

Data shows a massive increase in international travel with August being the most expensive time to get away. Meanwhile domestic travel is also on the rise with July being the most affordable, and unsurprisingly most popular.

Top city breaks

London, Paris, Istanbul, New York, and Bangkok have emerged as the most popular city breaks. Athens (54%), London (35%), and Rome (16%) top the charts for increased searches compared to the same period last year.

Experiencing Asia

Asia has gained massive interest this year from UAE travellers with Bangkok seeing a 67% surge in searches. Beach areas like Patong (100%), Krabi (215%), and Pattaya (155%) have also increased in popularity. The ever-popular Maldives, Mykonos and Bali have also maintained their allure for island seekers.

Staying closer to home

According to Expedia‘s report, domestic tourism has risen 112% in the UAE, double what it was last year. Many residents are choosing to find unique experiences closer to home, with Dubai stays increasing 85%. Popularity growth has spiked in Abu Dhabi (110%), Ras Al Khaimah (120%), and Fujairah (151%).

Shorter travel distances are also proving popular with Doha seeing a huge 430% increase, driven by global sports events. Saudi Arabia’s AlUla, Medinah, and Makkah have each seen a 260% increase compared to last year, and has trended during the Haj season. Alexandria is stealing Beirut’s spotlight with a 70% jump, and Hurghada is attracting adventure seekers with its marine life, enjoying a 115% boost in interest.
