Immersive art transforming tourism in Abu Dhabi

The highly anticipated opening of teamLAB Phenomena Abu Dhabi marks a new chapter for the Saadiyat Cultural District, continuing the region’s growing trend of immersive, tech-driven art experiences. Scheduled to open by the end of 2024, this 17,000 sqm facility will offer visitors a multi-sensory journey through constantly evolving digital artworks that blend art, science, and technology. Each installation in the museum is designed to respond to the local environment, making every visit a unique, transformative experience that sparks curiosity and creativity.

A new era for art attractions

This latest development mirrors the success of teamLAB Borderless in Jeddah, which attracted over 52,000 visitors in its first two months. Both venues emphasise the region’s growing demand for immersive art that transcends traditional gallery boundaries, offering more personalised, interactive experiences.

Immersive art attractions like these are reshaping tourism in the Middle East. No longer are visitors limited to traditional museum exhibits, art installations today increasingly incorporate cutting-edge digital technology, interactive spaces, and even physical activities. This allows visitors the opportunity for deeper engagement, like kayaking at the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Sharjah, as another example, is home to the Rain Room, an installation that invites visitors into the middle of a storm without getting wet.

The impact on tourism

Immersive art is no longer just a trend, it can offer a driving force for tourism, creating a bridge between cultural, artistic, and technological experiences in the region. The digital transformation of cultural spaces across the Middle East is creating destinations that attract visitors from around the world. These experiences are more memorable and meaningful, appealing to a younger demographic and boosting the hospitality, retail, and service industries in the surrounding areas.

In Abu Dhabi, teamLAB Phenomena, for example, is expected to significantly contribute to the city’s growing reputation as a cultural centre, much like its counterparts in Jeddah and Dubai. These immersive spaces are creating engaging experiences, ensuring that the Middle East remains on the radar for global travellers seeking both innovation and tradition in art.
