Turkish Airlines breaks world record for flying to most countries
Turkish Airlines has set a new Guinness World Record for operating flights to the highest number of countries from a single airport. Guinness World Records certified Turkish Airlines’ record based on 120 countries flown in the last 12 months. Nevertheless, including suspended flights, the airline’s extensive network includes 131 countries, all serviced from its hub at Istanbul Airport. This achievement underscores Turkish Airlines’ commitment to connecting diverse destinations and enhancing global travel accessibility.
The record reflects the airline’s strategic expansion and dedication to providing comprehensive flight options for passengers worldwide. Emirates Flight Training Academy graduates record cohort of 85 cadet pilots, introduces festive offerings for the 2024 holiday season
Earlier this week, the Emirates Flight Training Academy (EFTA) held its fifth graduation ceremony, celebrating its largest cohort of 85 cadets. The event, attended by HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, marked a milestone with the launch of an Advanced Diploma in Pilot Licensing Training (Aeroplane), following EFTA’s accreditation by the UAE National Qualifications Centre. The graduates, who completed over 1,100 hours of ground training and 270 hours of flight training, were recognised for their dedication and hard work. EFTA also announced plans to achieve European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) accreditation in 2025, allowing graduates to hold both GCAA and EASA licences, opening doors to global career opportunities.
Meanwhile, throughout December 2024, Emirates is offering a range of festive treats onboard and in its lounges. Passengers can enjoy traditional holiday meals, including roasted turkey with accompaniments, across all cabin classes. In First and Business Class lounges in Dubai, seasonal desserts such as stollen and mince pies are available, complemented by special beverages like the Tranquil Tundra cocktail. During this time, the in-flight entertainment system will also feature popular holiday films and music playlists to add to the festive atmosphere.
Etihad Airways launches educational initiative in Kenya, and spreads festive cheer with in-flight holiday offerings
Etihad Airways has announced a significant educational initiative in Kenya, reinforcing its commitment to community development. This programme aims to provide enhanced learning opportunities for underprivileged students, focusing on improving educational infrastructure and resources. The airline’s efforts include the distribution of essential school supplies and the renovation of educational facilities. By investing in education, Etihad Airways seeks to empower local communities and contribute to sustainable development in the region.
Meanwhile, to celebrate the holiday season, the airline’s released limited-edition amenity kits in partnership with Giorgio Armani and ESPA passengers on long-haul routes will enjoy. For the holidays, Qatar Airways has given its AI-driven ‘Qatar Airways Adventure’ campaign a festive makeover, where users can create personalised videos with holiday characters like elves and snowmen, share them on social media, and enter a giveaway for two Business Class tickets. This initiative underscores Qatar Airways’ commitment to engaging customers with innovative experiences during the holiday season.
In the meantime, thanks to an expanded partnership, Qantas Airways Privilege Club members can now exchange Avios for Marriott Bonvoy points at a 2:1 ratio, unlocking a wider range of redemption options at Marriott hotels worldwide. Saudia and Riyadh Season Launch BLVD Runway
Saudia Group has partnered with Riyadh Season 2024 to create BLVD Runway, an airport-themed zone featuring three repurposed Boeing 777s offering entertainment, shopping, dining, and interactive experiences. The zone’s launch was marked by a symbolic handover ceremony, with the aircraft having been transported overland from Jeddah to Riyadh over 12 days, attracting significant social media attention and welcoming events in towns along the route.
Saudia Group’s Director General highlighted the collaboration as a key part of Saudi Vision 2030, showcasing the airline’s platinum sponsorship of Riyadh Season 2024. Dammam’s King Fahd International Airport sets new passenger record
Dammam Airports Company has reported a significant increase in air traffic at King Fahd International Airport during the second half of 2024. From January to mid-December 2024, the airport handled 12 million passengers, marking a 15% growth compared to the same period in 2023. Flight operations also saw an uptick, with over 99,000 flights during this period, a 5% increase year-on-year. The airport achieved a new daily passenger record, surpassing 50,000 travellers in a single day. Additionally, on 13 June 2024, the airport managed 374 flights, setting a new daily high for flight operations. These milestones underscore the airport’s expanding role in regional air travel and its commitment to accommodating increasing passenger demand.
Riyadh Air partners with Artefact to develop AI solutions for aviation
Riyadh Air has announced a strategic partnership with Artefact, a global data consulting and digital marketing firm, to develop artificial intelligence (AI) solutions tailored for the aviation industry. Air Arabia adds Vienna
Sharjah-based low-cost carrier Air Arabia has achieved a major milestone with the launch of its inaugural direct flight to Vienna, Austria. This marks the airline’s entry into the European market, further expanding its global network. The airline will operate four weekly direct flights from Sharjah International Airport to Vienna International Airport using its modern fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft. The inaugural flight, which departed from Sharjah, was attended by dignitaries including Dr. Etienne Berchtold, the Austrian Ambassador to the UAE, and senior Air Arabia representatives. Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority, also attended the launch ceremony.
Pegasus Airlines places $36 billion order for 200 Boeing 737-10 aircraft
Pegasus Airlines, a leading low-cost carrier in TΓΌrkiye, has announced a substantial order for 200 Boeing 737-10 aircraft, valued at approximately $36 billion based on current list prices. The agreement includes a firm order for 100 aircraft, with deliveries commencing in 2028, and options for an additional 100 units. This strategic investment aims to support the carrier’s growth objectives and aligns with its sustainability targets for 2050. Currently operating one of the youngest fleets globally, with an average age of 4.5 years, the airline seeks to expand its network and contribute to TΓΌrkiye’s tourism sector, which is targetting 100 million visitors and $100 billion in revenue. beOnd Airlines announces ambitious expansion plans for 2025
beOnd Airlines, the first premium leisure airline, has unveiled ambitious growth plans. Currently serving five cities, beOnd aims to expand its network to 54 destinations across 39 countries by 2028. Having already carried over 8,000 passengers, the airline projects annual passenger numbers to reach 400,000 within four years. beOnd’s all-business class fleet, currently consisting of two Airbus aircraft, will grow to 27 by 2028. In addition to its Maldives routes from cities like Zurich, Munich, Milan, Riyadh, and Dubai, beOnd has launched flights between Dubai and Zurich. With high customer satisfaction (NPS scores significantly above industry averages), beOnd is also pursuing an Air Operator Certificate in the UAE and a second operating certificate in the GCC by 2025.
Wizz Air Abu Dhabi moves Bucharest flights to BΔneasa
From 30 March 2025, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi’s Bucharest flights will move from Henri Coanda International Airport to the more central BΔneasa Airport, offering travellers easier access to downtown Bucharest and improved connectivity to other Romanian destinations. Passengers are advised to check their booking details for airport changes. Wizz Air Abu Dhabi continues to offer services like WIZZ MultiPass and WIZZ Flex, providing affordable travel across the Middle East, Europe, and Central Asia, with recent route expansions to Varna and Yerevan. This relocation reinforces the airline’s commitment to convenient, budget-friendly travel.
DXB creates magical holiday memories for travellers
Dubai International (DXB) is transforming into a festive wonderland until 5 January 2025, offering travellers a magical holiday experience. The airport features various festive entertainment, including carolers with a beatbox twist, a Christmas Day parade, a Nutcracker-themed marching band, and spontaneous live performances. Qatar Airways goes back to Aussie Capital
Qatar Airways is set to restart its daily flights to Canberra, Australia’s capital, in 2025, making it easier for travellers to visit or connect via the airlineβs vast global network. Canberra travellers will fly via Melbourne to Hamad International Airport (Doga) in Boeing 777 aircraft featuring the Q-suite Business Class cabins and new Starlink Wi-Fi as standard. The partnership with Virgin Australia strengthens Qatar Airwaysβ commitment to the Australian market with bookings now available for flights between Australia and Qatar from Mid-2025. Melbourne flights will commence from December 2025 and will be available to book from January 2025.
Turkish Airlines sets sights on new JFK terminal for 2026, tackles lost baggage with technology, resumes flights to Benghazi
Turkish Airlines has announced it will be one of the carriers operating from the new Terminal 1 at the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), opening in 2026. The airline will not only provide world-class travel connections but will also inaugurate a brand-new 11,000 sq ft lounge that promises to enhance the passenger experience. This new lounge is expected to be twice the size of the existing one and will cater to Turkish Airlines’ growing presence in the U.S. Travellers can look forward to a smooth and comfortable journey, with access to more facilities and better amenities.
Meanwhile, the carrier has partnered with Apple to introduce a baggage tracking system using AirTag and Find My technology. With the aim to prevent lost luggage issues, passengers can share their luggage location via the Find My app, and Turkish Airlines will use this data to quickly locate and return baggage. The feature, available with iOS 18.2, can be activated by generating a “Share Location” link, which is submitted securely through the airline’s website. Turkish Airlines plans to add this functionality to its mobile app for more convenience in the future.
Finally, the airline will resume flights to Benghazi, Libya, on 14 January 2025, after a decade-long hiatus. The new route will operate three times a week between Istanbul and Benina International Airport. This follows the airline’s return to Tripoli in April 2024, marking a commitment to boosting connectivity and strengthening ties between Turkey and Libya.

Air Arabia adds Tashkent from RAK, and Sochi from Sharjah
Air Arabia is launching direct flights from Ras Al Khaimah to Tashkent from 27 December 2024. This new route provides a direct connection between the UAE and Uzbekistan, opening up new opportunities for business and leisure travellers alike. The weekly flights will operate every Friday, departing at 09:10 from Ras Al Khaimah and landing at 13:20 in Tashkent. This brings the destinations in Air Arabiaβs network to eight, including Moscow, Islamabad, and Cairo. Tickets are already on sale.
The carrier will also launch a new non-stop route between Sharjah and Sochi, Russia, starting 27 June 2025, with three flights per week. Sochi will be the sixth Russian city served by the airline from Sharjah, joining Moscow, Kazan, Samara, Ufa, and Yekaterinburg. This expansion highlights Air Arabiaβs commitment to enhancing connectivity, boosting tourism, and fostering trade between the UAE and Russia.

Etihad Airwaysβ Nairobi flights mark tenth destination for 2024
Etihad Airways launched a new service to Nairobi on December 15, 2024, marking its tenth new destination in a year of network expansion. This route strengthens commercial and cultural ties between the UAE and Kenya, responding to high travel demand. With Kenyaβs tourism growth, the route provides enhanced access to Nairobi and supports Abu Dhabiβs position as an aviation hub.
Etihadβs 2024 expansion also includes destinations like Antalya, Bali, and Boston. In 2025, the airline plans to add 13 more destinations, including Warsaw, Taipei, Hong Kong, and Prague, continuing its ambitious global network growth.
Saudia and flyadeal recognised for global on-time performance
According to independent aviation tracking site Cirium, Saudia and flyadeal have achieved outstanding On-Time Performance (OTP) results for November 2024. Saudia ranked first globally with an on-time arrival rate of 89.85% after over 16,300 flights, marking its third first-place finish in 2024.
Flyadeal secured second place among low-cost carriers with a 90.48% OTP, continuing its strong performance. These achievements highlight Saudia Group’s operational excellence, supported by Saudiaβs transformation program “Shine.” Looking ahead, Saudia plans to expand its fleet and destinations, aligning with Saudi Arabiaβs Vision 2030, while flyadeal will increase international flights starting in early 2025.
