The aviation sector continues to witness rapid advancements, with notable developments ranging from route expansions and sustainability initiatives to strategic partnerships and enhanced passenger experiences. Here are this weekโ€™s highlights: 

Emirates adds a third non-stop flight to Melbourne

Emirates has launched its third non-stop service from Dubai to Melbourne using its newly retrofitted Boeing 777, featuring upgraded cabins for enhanced passenger comfort. Starting 30 March 2025, this aircraft will be used for flights four times per day on the route. This supports the strong demand being seen from travellers as the airline tries to accommodate record passenger volumes this festive season. 

The airline expects to see more than 88,000 customer departures per day during key festive dates and has urged travellers to book early, check-in online, and arrive at airports on time to ensure smooth journeys. 

Etihad Airways launches CSK livery with inaugural flight to Chennai

Etihad Airways has celebrated the launch of its new Chennai Super Kings (CSK) livery with its inaugural flight from Abu Dhabi to Chennai. The Airbus A320-neo, the first of its kind for a UAE carrier, landed in Chennai at 2:55pm local time, greeted by a water cannon salute. CSK players Gurjapneet Singh, Rahul Tripathi, and Vijay Shankar welcomed the flight, making a special announcement for passengers. Guests were also surprised with sweet treats to mark the partnership.

Throughout the year, the Etihad and CSK partnership has been brought to life through a series of engaging fan experiences, including the distribution of bespoke whistles in the shape of aircraft, allowing CSK fans to cheer on their team in the signature โ€˜Whistle Poduโ€™ style. These activations have taken place at numerous matches, bringing fans closer to the action and strengthening Etihad’s presence in the Indian sporting community.

UAEโ€™s private aviation sector soars amid millionaire influx

The UAEโ€™s private jet industry is on track to conclude 2024 on a high, fuelled by rising demand for exclusive air travel from a growing population of millionaires and affluent residents. With the UAE solidifying its status as a hub for high-net-worth individuals and a recent analyst report showing increased demand for tailored luxury experiences, including private charters and bespoke services, the private aviation sector is poised for sustained expansion in 2025. 

The sector is bolstered by new operators and infrastructure enhancements, such as advanced terminal facilities, entering the market, ensuring seamless operations and boosting industry growth. 

RoyalJet signs MoU with Airbus Corporate Jets for new aircraft

RoyalJet, a premium private jet operator based in Abu Dhabi, has signed an MoU with Airbus Corporate Jets to purchase three new ACJ320neo aircraft, with six additional purchase rights. The MoU was signed at the MEBAA Show 2024 in Dubai. The ACJ320neo, known for its spacious cabin, superior comfort, advanced technology, and fuel efficiency, will enhance RoyalJet’s services and provide exceptional travel experiences. RoyalJet aims to meet the growing demand for private jets and continue its commitment to service excellence; and Airbus is excited to support RoyalJet’s growth with this new addition to its fleet.

Egypt climbs 36 spots in global aviation rankings

Egypt has made a significant leap in global aviation rankings, advancing more than 30 positions in the Air Transport Infrastructure Index. This progress is attributed to the countryโ€™s investments of $626.7 million in aviation infrastructure, which include modernising airports, enhancing safety protocols, and adopting cutting-edge technologies.

Key initiatives to improve operational efficiency and service quality while increasing airport capacity by 28.5% have also contributed to its success. 

Jetex partners with Red Sea Global for private terminal

Red Sea Global (RSG) has partnered with Dubai-based Jetex to operate the private aviation terminal at Saudi Arabiaโ€™s Red Sea International Airport (RSI). Jetex, a global leader in private aviation, will manage a dedicated terminal as part of RSIโ€™s innovative design featuring five independent โ€œmini terminals.โ€

This marks Jetexโ€™s first major venture in Saudi Arabia, emphasising sustainability and luxury tourism. Services include jet handling, concierge, and electric transfers. The partnership aligns with RSGโ€™s vision of blending design, luxury, and nature. RSI began international flights in April 2024.

Saudia attracts Indian tourists, increases Thailand flights, and renews Amadeus partnership

Saudia has unveiled plans to attract 7.5 million Indian tourists annually by 2030, reflecting its strategy to capitalise on Indiaโ€™s growing outbound travel market. To achieve this, the airline has focused on fleet modernisation and embracing new technology. Its new AI-powered platform, โ€˜Travel Companionโ€™, which improves customer experience and planning, is currently being tested. Saudia currently operates more than 50 flights per week to major Indian cities like Kozhikode, Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Kochi. 

The airline has also launched new routes for its 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft connecting Riyadh and Jeddah to popular holiday destination, Phuket, Thailand. Meanwhile, Saudia has also extended its partnership with Amadeus to incorporate New Distribution Capability (NDC) technology, streamlining ticketing processes and enhancing customer experiences.

Qatar Airwaysโ€™ sustainable growth and Starlink integration

Qatar Airways is doubling down on its commitment to sustainability and passenger convenience according to group CEO, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer at the 2024 Doha forum. Priorities also include employee retention and well-being. 

The airline is also planning to equip its entire fleet with SpaceXโ€™s Starlink connectivity, offering passengers high-speed internet access during flights.  With plans to leverage cutting-edge technology, the airline aims to enhance inflight experiences while contributing to sustainable aviation. The move also complements Qatar Airways’ efforts to address the growing demand for reliable onboard connectivity, further strengthening its appeal among tech-savvy travellers.

New Saudi Arabia connectivity from Fly Jinnahย

Fly Jinnah, a low-cost carrier in Pakistan, is expanding its presence in Saudi Arabia adding new flights between Lahore to Riyadh (three per week), Dammam (three per week), and Jeddah (daily) from 6 December 2024. Operating a modern Airbus A320 fleet, Fly Jinnah serves five major Pakistani cities, offering comfortable seating, an onboard SkyCafe menu, and complimentary SkyTime in-flight streaming for an exceptional travel experience. This expansion aims to enhance connectivity and convenience for travellers, reflecting Fly Jinnahโ€™s commitment to fostering ties between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. 

Turkish Airlines unveils eco-friendly kidsโ€™ kits

Turkish Airlines has introduced a new line of eco-friendly kidsโ€™ kits, designed to improve young passengersโ€™ inflight experiences while promoting sustainability. These kits, handed out in grey backpacks decorated with aeroplanes, include reusable and recyclable items including: red slippers and matching non-slip socks, a red headset for music, a recycled PET eye mask, an eco-friendly toothbrush and toothpaste. 

By combining functionality with fun, Turkish Airlines aims to enhance its appeal among families travelling with children. This move is part of a larger trend in the aviation industry toward adopting eco-conscious practices and improving the overall passenger experience.
